A Screw

A screw is an inclined plane wrapped around a nail. The ridges are called threads of a screw. These threads cut into the wood as you turn the screw, making a groove. So it holds very tightly. To take out a screw you have to turn in the opposite direction with a screwdriver. It is hard to remove a screw by pulling it straight out. The distance between the threads depends on the angle of the inclined plane - the steeper the angle, the wider the thread. Screws with less distance between the threads are easier to turn.

With any inclined plane used as a simple machine, the force used is less but the distance is greater.
