A third class lever is like a fishing pole. When the pole is given a tug, one end stays still but the other end flips in the air catching the fish.

In a third class lever the resistance force comes first then the input force and last is the fulcrum. Using a fishing rod the fish is the resistance force, you reeling in is the input force and the fulcrum is your arm. A fishing rod makes it easier to pull in a big fish because it would be harder to just wrap the line around your hand as we show below.

Without the fishing rod this could happen to you.

But with the fishing rod this will be you.

A shovel is also a third class lever because the dirt on the end is the resistance force. Your arm lifting is the input force and your arm holding the handle acts as the fulcrum.
